Tim & Camilla Rutherford farming case study on restoring water cycles

πŸ“½ New case study


The Rutherford family has been the owner operator of Point Station in Central Otago since 1910. The 5500ha beef and sheep station is a diverse but brittle landscape relying on meagre rainfall, topped up with pivots and flood irrigation on flats and terraces. Successive dry years in the early 2000s got 5th generation farmer, Tim Rutherford, questioning their system and in 2015 he stumbled across soil health - a light bulb moment.

Since then, Tim and Camilla Rutherford have been on a mission to be as self-sustaining as possible, and to store all the water they can in the soil. Changing their grazing and irrigation management has been game-changing and proved to be their most valuable investment. Their water usage is now a tenth than it used to be.

Seven years focus on soil health, regenerative management and holistic decision-making has transformed the health and resilience of their farm, driving an exciting vision of a self-sustaining and resilient landscape, business and community.

Last summer, on a searing hot day, Deane paid Tim and Camilla a visit to film their observations, learnings, outcomes and next steps.

Thanks to those who expressed interest in Nicole’s courses. She will be back on New Zealand soil next month. We are pleased to be able to support her Soil Resilience Tour consisting of two day advanced workshops in the North Island (16/17 Nov) and South Island (23/24 Nov).
